“What is AI good for?”

What is AI good for?

It’s been three years since ChatGPT first captured the public imagination (and one year since I started this Substack), and despite billions in investment and the confident predictions of AI CEOs, we’re still not close to artificial general intelligence.

It turns out scale alone – more computing power and more data – which has been the mantra for the last year, is not enough to create it. AI realist Gary Marcus sums it up best in his piece, “Scale Is All You Need” is Dead. And Project 2027, a look into our near-future with imminent AGI radically transforming life as we know it, has been deemed by experts to be a work of science fiction, at least for now.

But just because our robot overlords haven’t arrived yet, doesn’t mean AI is going away. To the contrary, in 3 short years it’s found its way into every aspect of the film and advertising space. I’ve researched and worked with virtually all the tools with curiosity and skepticism, asking the question: how useful is AI in the real world?

So before the holidays hit, I attempt to provide an answer with my top 3 AI uses in 2025, informed by my belief that AI is at its best when we keep humans at the center.
